my personal concerns for the fall/winter of 2021

i want to emphasize that what i’m about to say is personal conjecture and not rhetoric from a heath department:

i am deeply, deeply concerned that we are going to see children begin to be hospitalized and experience increased mortality from delta this winter.

schools are in session. community transmission is high. delta is far deadlier and far more infectious than its predecessor. i’m deeply worried about our youth population.

my perspective on delta as a public health worker

we are on track to run out of ventilators and sedation if the influx of hospitalizations continue, which they no doubt will. we are back where we started in the winter of 2020, and winter’s not even here yet.

my perspective on delta as a public health worker

as a person who works closely with a county public health department, i am often privy to an internal perspective that is less accessible to the general public.

currently, that narrative in my county heath dept is as follows:

delta is aggressively spreading, and hospital beds are filling. if you haven’t already, return to lockdown procedures to the best of your ability. yes, even if you and everyone you know is vaccinated.

cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get vaccinated and minimize contact with other people, even when vaccinated

if you do not moderate right wingers out of your social space, they will moderate it for you

If I see anyone repost any shit mocking people dying from COVID-19 because they are conservative I will immediately block you.

I have some things happening right now, and I have zero patience for leftists gloating over preventable deaths. They aren't siloed-off individuals. They have families. They have people who depended upon them and people they depend upon. It's sad.

I have zero patience for any nonsense.

And speaking of fighting versus support work, I have a related bone to pick with what kinds of work we count as patriarchy-smashing badassery an what is considered boring, sexism-reinforcing, "women's" work. Hey guess what! Not only did women fight, we also cooked, foraged, raised children, and did the cleaning! Yet we never declare the end of patriarchy for these reasons--no, it's always the women with weapons who are supposedly ending sexism.

Why do we have that value system? Why do we count "men's" work as worthier, better, and more liberating than "women's" work? How is killing somehow better than nurturing and maintaining a living? *whispers* That's the violent patriarchy speaking.

To push back just a tiny bit on the embarrassing level of historical ignorance on display, women in all societies fought when needed, and some were even expected to fulfill military duties due to their station. Plenty of women led armies and went to war. Lady Triệu in Vietnam. Joanna of Flanders. Nzinga Mbande in Central Africa.

Women have fought in every war, every revolution, every social movement. And that's just the physical fighting and not even going into the supply and other support work that women fulfilled throughout history. Women have ALWAYS fought. Women have ALWAYS done the things men did. None of it meant a lack or end of violent patriarchy, because women doing stuff and women being badass is not what patriarchy is fucking about.

Women did badass things in the past, hashtag feminism! News flash, women were *always* badass. We were *always* capable and did lots of amazing things. AND we have been abused and oppressed like hell for millennia in most societies. The two things are not mutually incompatible! In fact, our capabilities have been and still are used to exploit us! But it's ✨progress✨ if we're exploited in the same ways as men in addition to the ways uniquely associated with women, right? ...Right?

Signalise is a platform co-op that enables users to request and book interpreting services. Its democratically owned by deaf people, health staff and interpreters. This year they raised £330,000 pounds of investment in a crowdfunding campaign, exceeding their target by 10%.

It has now won the bid to become the main service provider for sign language interpreter services for the National Health Service in Liverpool, the fifth largest city in the country.

If we mobilize 1K people to the state capitol - and peacefully hold the ground - there’s a real chance we could force a political crisis and #stopline3.

Logged into Instagram for the first time in months yesterday, just to check on some friends who don't communicate well elsewhere...

anyway here is a reminder that if you are cis and looking for ways you can be a Good Trans Ally, please join me in this endeavor by questioning every single entity behind registration forms that require you to declare m or f. talking points include:
* why do you need this information?
* will you be verifying this with an ID check of some sort, and is that consistent regardless of someone's appearance?
* what options do you provide for someone who cannot answer either m or f?

hot take: fossil fuel executives should be tried at Den Haag for crimes against humanity

it's much worse of course, because it's a crime against not just humanity but life in general, but we don't have a mechanism for trying "crimes against existence" yet

Looking for housing by the end of the month (California Bay Area), boosts much appreciated :boost_requested:

Hey, so!

We're uhhh getting kicked out at the end of the month. >,,<

We have no money and nowhere to go. We can't drive, and public transport in the rest of the country seems basically nonexistent, so we have to stay in bus range of the BART train system. But anywhere within that should work equally well.

oh and the cherry on top is that the three dudes doing all this hard work in the sun... are not wearing masks. Outside my window. 😷
